Is Your Cleanser Helping or Hurting? How to Choose the Right One for Your Skin

Why Cleansers Matter More Than You Think

Cleansers are often treated like an afterthought — just a quick step before the “real” skincare begins. But what you use to wash your face sets the tone for everything else. If your cleanser is too harsh, your serums and moisturizers are fighting an uphill battle.

A good cleanser doesn’t just clean — it respects your skin barrier, supports hydration, and keeps things balanced.

The Problem with Over-Cleansing

We see it all the time: clients coming in with tight, flaky, or breakout-prone skin — and a cleanser that’s doing way too much. Cleansers that foam aggressively, contain drying alcohols, or include harsh actives can strip your skin’s natural oils and disrupt the microbiome.

Some signs your cleanser may be causing more harm than good:

  • Your skin feels squeaky clean (that’s not a good thing)

  • You feel dry, tight, or itchy after washing

  • You’re breaking out more than usual despite a “simple” routine

How to Know If Your Cleanser Is Too Harsh

If your face feels:

  • Tighter after cleansing than before

  • Red or reactive right after washing

  • Like you have to rush to apply moisturizer to feel okay…

…it’s probably time for a cleanser upgrade.

Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Dry or Sensitive Skin:
Look for a non-foaming, creamy or gel cleanser with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or panthenol. Avoid essential oils, sulfates, and unnecessary fragrances.

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin:
Balance is key — not all acne needs a drying cleanser. Try a gentle foaming or gel-based formula with ingredients like mandelic acid, green tea, or sulfur. (And yes, we carry acne-safe options that don’t wreck your barrier.)

Combo or Normal Skin:
Look for cleansers that support the skin’s natural balance — nothing too creamy, nothing too foamy. A gentle gel or lotion cleanser usually works great.
